Wrong Abstract RONALD DAGONNIER TRACEUR XY, ECRANS, DEUX WEBCAMS, DEUX MICROS-CONTACT, RECONNAISSANCE VISUELLE (CLIP / PYTHON), MADMAPPER, ABLETON LIVE, VOIX « HAL » (FR / EN)

Wrong Abstract RONALD DAGONNIER XY PLOTTER, SCREENS, TWO WEBCAMS, TWO CONTACT MICROPHONES, VISUAL RECOGNITION (CLIP / PYTHON), MADMAPPER, ABLETON LIVE, « HAL » VOICE (FR / EN)

A mechanical arm follows an image generated by code. An artificial intelligence — the CLIP vision model — tries to recognise it, names it on a 7-inch screen and has it spoken aloud in HAL’s cold voice. The sound is born of the machine itself : two contact microphones, one per motor, capture the song of the plotter’s stepper motors in real time, extended with reverb. It reviews 51 artists of historical abstraction and displays its own database, then gradually corrupts its own references : a macro close-up leads it astray ; then, on its own initiative, it applies a Rutt-Etra effect that reduces the works to their extrusion lines ; finally it substitutes for this corpus a catalogue of artists from the digital world (MadMapper World Meetup). Each time, it gets it wrong : it sees Rothko in code, attributes to Kandinsky the work of a digital artist. Then it decides to go further still : it adds a 120 BPM kick, a pulse meant to make the installation more human. In the end, a second camera films the audience, run through the same filter : each viewer becomes, in turn, an abstract image handed over to analysis. We no longer look at art ; we watch the machine fail to read it. That is the whole point. What will art criticism look like once it is delegated to automated systems ? Who will define the value of a work when institutions rely on evaluation algorithms ? What becomes of the gaze — that subjective, situated, irreducible act — when it is replaced by statistical inference ? HAL does not doubt ; it produces fluent, articulate, perfectly false discourse. Wrong Abstract does not attack technology : it exposes it at its most revealing limit — that of meaning.

ENG / FR — language of HAL’s commentary

Next / Print — advance one cue and print the image

Start — restart the installation at the end of the loop
